Objects of desire.

Vin and I discovered a beautiful little house in Montecito, called “JULIANNE”, that boasted carefully-curated clothing and a very helpful buyer and sales representative, Amanda Fazio.  Amanda remembered my ‘thank you’ blog, and sent this magnificent letter opener by L’Objet as a Christmas gift. I wrote her to thank her — so I can now…

Peter Michael’s Winery & “Les Pavots”.

We invited our neighbors to a party on Sunday … and the Chens have a dear friend, Hiro, who was looking at cars with all of us when we talked about the party. Of course we extended a heartfelt invitation to Hiro.  When he arrived, he came bearing a red-silk wrapped bottle … and later…

“VARIETY” and social grace.

I went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s event today.  It was “The Third State of the Entertainment Industry Conference”, and about 500 dignitaries and heavyweights were in the room.  Vin got an award –for his “Commitment to California”.  And I got to meet some interesting women, among them the publisher of VARIETY.  Michelle Sobrino-Stearns…

Stanford carries on.

I had the honor of meeting a group of counselors for Camp Kesem when I was in Michigan — including “CAPO”.  I promised to write all the guys letters when I got back to Los Angeles, which I’m doing right now.  They gave me special cufflinks with the Camp Kesem mascot, which I carried home…

Cufflinks & a leader in the dark.

Hotel tip.

Hotel guests don’t always realize that the maid should be tipped each day, The Renaissance in Novi, Michigan put out an envelope. It offered a place for the tip — and promised a tip in return. On the back of my envelope:  “White wine will take out a red wine stain.” I always write a…

Shoes from which to choose.

As a person with a narrow foot, it gets frustrating to shop for shoes. I was at Neiman-Marcus the other afternoon, waiting for Vin, and decided to dawdle around the Ladies’ Shoe Salon. Since I have been cursed with a narrow foot, I generally never can find anything that fits…but it’s nice to torture myself….

Scheduling pro.

I’m setting up meetings for the Dean of the Arts Division, David Yager… and it’s not always easy to coordinate with various assistants and get a time nailed down.  Stephanie was so helpful that I promised to write her a note — and kept my word, as soon as we got back from the meeting….

Lost in the halls.

There she was, a hot cup of soup in her hands, at 6 o’clock at night.  She was getting ready to work a few quiet hours, I could tell, and the building was shut down for the day.  Until I came along.  Box of “thank you” cards in hand, typewriter purse on my arm, I…
