Loud toys and Hanukkah cheer.

After he had his new son, I promised my ex-husband I’d be the first to buy Justin a drumset.  I had to wait 6 years, but this Hanukkah it seemed right.  When we were gathered at my former brother-in-law Jonny’s — after a rambunctious meal with the latkes long gone — I finally got my…

The company Xmas.

Corporate Christmas parties (for television production companies) are a rarity since 2008. Dinner and dancing morphed into a steakhouse luncheon, but my husband’s staff enjoyed the effort.  Vin’s assistant Melissa knocks herself out to put together a great event so I let her know I appreciate the effort…and so does everyone else. A party Martha Stewart would be proud of…

When I go to someone’s house and my hostess (or host) labors over more than one hot appetizer, I’m duly impressed. When they pull off a successful parlor trick — here a party game that can stump the crowd and not create a riot — I’m doubly stupefied … and I show it. Please Share

Speed and Xanax.

Fall should be  contemplative, a slow curve into Winter.  Unfortunately,  things seem to get even busier then — school starts, people are back on deadline, even the days get shorter.  Sometimes there’s too much on my plate, and I can’t do it all.  When I can’t make it to a party — and I really want to go…

Bowled over by the Bowl.

Chuck and Shelby have season tickets to the Hollywood Bowl and we’ve been lucky enough to be their guests on several occasions.  We didn’t get there until summer was almost over, but it was worth the wait.  Chuck & Shelby have it wired — and despite some silverware that finds its way into my bag…

Dinner and a movie.

We love James Franco, my friend Gregory and I.  He attended our high school — Palo Alto High — and RISD for grad school. He’s a fascinating actor… and after we saw his art exhibit by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Gregory and I made plans to rent a James Dean classic and see how James…

In & Out Burgers, al fresco.

Sometimes the most genius idea is the simplest.  In & Out Burgers, brought in fresh straight from the fryer.   Outside on a summer day. Margaritas.  Chuck & Ava know how to do it. Please Share

‘Basheret’ brisket.

I ran a Seder once.  Halfway into the first day of prep I was already exhausted. As a converted Jew, I struggle with the prayers and can barely make a brisket. I appreciate my friend Darlene’s prowess with butchery… and since I don’t have my own Jewish traditions, I appreciate being adopted into her family…

Tiny tea cups and the school’s President.

When the President of Rhode Island School of Design broke into his day to personally pour porcelain cups of freshly-brewed tea for Vin and me, when I got back to California, I spotted some tiny sushi magnets and a cunning teeny-tiny teapot and cups — in a Japanese import store and promptly sent them to him…
