Love and typewriters.

If there was ever a convergence of things that drive me-  — it’s typewriters and LOVE. So when Donna Brown Guillaume sent me this Christmas gift — and I unwrapped it from the huge box it came in tonight — I immediately gave it top billing in my office.  Whenever I’m down, now I’ll look…

Handwritten.

Justin, age 9, wanted video games for his birthday.  I went to TOYS R US to find them, but got so mystified by the choices — and by the various ways they could be played — I gave up and opted for a simple gift card. To make it a little more exciting, I put…

National Design Awards.

Provost Pradeep Sharma; Chairman of the Board Michael Spalter;  Me;  RISD Museum Director John W. Smith; President Rosanne Somerson; Trustee Amita Chatterjee; Trustee Jon Kamen;  Trustee Nicole Miller; Trustee Bob Glass; Trustee Susan Dryfoos. I flew to New York for the Cooper Hewitt’s own version of the Academy Awards — National Design Awards.  I came…

8 1/2 narrows.

Jamie had to work and her college roommate Alison came into town for a long weekend.  I took Alison around — to The Getty, where we looked at the bronze exhibit with another RISD alum… to Beverly Hills, where we looked at shoes on Rodeo Drive…and lunch at Neiman-Marcus before we went to the beach….

Bring Bring.

Karen Schmidt’s always got the best stationery. Maybe because she works at The Getty, or maybe because she has access to better printers… I’m not sure what it is, but I always looks forward to her missives. I smiled when I saw that she customized this notecard to make it a ‘Thank You’ card. She typed…

Surprised by cookies.

I met two Rhode Island School of Design alums — Clifford Selbert and his wife Robin Perkins at a send-off event for freshman students. I learned their daughter is a fan of “America’s Funniest Videos”. I invited them to see a show.  Vin featured them on television … and after a few re-scheduled shows, they…
