Post-party fun.

Part of the fun when I give a party is seeing who writes afterwards.  I’m always surprised — at what people touched people and what they choose to comment about in their notes.  When I read a letter from a guest, I’m transported back to the event … and I get to re-live it through…

Gracious loser…with a typo.

I didn’t get the job — but I wanted to thank the head of Human Resources who stayed in touch with me throughout the process. She sent me an e-mail, which I responded to — but then I also added a personal “snail mail” touch. A real letter is more “me”.   Although I got…

Astronomers encourage writing ‘thank you notes’

www.astrobetter.com/the-importance-of-thank-you-notes/ One of my goals this year is to be a “TED” speaker about “The Art of Thank You”.  I want to see what others say about why ‘thank you’s’ are important.  I blundered into this piece so am sharing it with you. Please Share

My 4th grade teacher — still important after all these years.

http://www.lewsilvers.com/artist-bio/ Do you have one teacher who made a difference in your life?  For me, it was Mr. Silvers, in fourth grade.  He “saw” who I was… gave me my first nickname — “Eggy”, because I admitted when I was little, I couldn’t pronounce my own name and came up with that instead.  Years later,…

American Cool…and Johnny Depp.

www.npg.si.edu/exhibit/exhcool.html I met Kim Sajet, Director of the National Portrait Gallery for the Smithsonian, the first month she’d taken office. She was in Los Angeles and I showed her around The Jonathan Club, one of our downtown pieces of history.  I remember talking with her about an idea she was percolating — to have a…

A note written Christmas morn.

My niece Kuu — whose 20th birthday is today! — was so excited about the suitcases she got that she wrote me the same morning she got them, while my father was still making his traditional ‘matzo brie’ for breakfast.  (We’re a blended family, OK?)   My brother Steve sent me a picture of Kuu…

How Neiman Marcus bowled me over.

Neiman Marcus prides itself on customer service.  So when they sent us a beautiful Fortuny bowl — as a “thank you for shopping here”, I was properly “bowled over”.  I kept Jim Gold’s note for a while, then decided, why not?  He would appreciate a note as much as anybody.  I caught a few typos…

“Brag book” a year later.

I send Christmas checks to people who help me throughout the year, like Wil from Absolut Pool & Spa.  He’s nursed an ailing, elderly pool for me for more than a decade now, and every time we call him I hold my breath that the patient needs life support.  But each time Wil comes through…

My baby brother.

Everyone’s always surprised when I talk about “my baby brother”, because people expect a “baby”  … so they’re understandably shocked when he confidently strides in the room, all six-foot four of him.  Steve may be taller but I’m seven years older — and remember when Mom and Dad brought him home, swaddled in diapers. He’s…

Pop up fun!

Christy Hale, my friend from junior high, adroitly spotted this card — as part of a campaign to promote an author’s website, they’re giving away a box a month.  I may leapfrog the system and figure out how to buy them direct.  Don’t they make you smile?  I can hardly wait to get a hold…
