Gloria #1 types a perfect note.
After I give a party, I like to remember the high points. It’s my way of living the party all over again. A meditation, reflection. When I get a note from a friend — in this case, Gloria G., or “Gloria #1” as we call her (since we have three Glorias to distinguish between) — I love hearing what GG (who’s in her late 80’s) enjoyed the most, too…
Gloria’s typing on an IBM Selectric that we rescued from where I used to work. My friend and former boss Mark H. called me one day and said, “We have an IBM that we’re about to throw out — unless you want it?”
I called Gloria #1 and inquired if she’d take one if I could get it. She was delighted. As a former studio secretary to Hollywood movie producers, she’d grown up clacking the keys. She’d had a machine that she’d “put by the side of the street”, she mourned, “because I didn’t know where to get it fixed anymore.”
The production company brought it over from Burbank to my house. Then Gloria and I carried it over to Ermanno at Star Office Machines for a complete diagnostic tune-up. After it was up and running again, Gloria took over — and now she’s back to typing error-free.
