A grandfather’s gift.
On Saturday morning, Brian came over bearing three typewriters in hard leather cases.
He was giving one — his first, a manual — to his 12-year-old grandddaughter Georgie.
He wanted me to choose which of the other two I wanted.
He knew I’ve been looking for a portable, electric, in a hard case that I could take when I travel.
I tried all three of them,
Georgie’s, like the little bear in “Goldilocks” was too hard.
The other one was too soft.
And the last one — a smaller, more compact Smith-Corona, was “just right”.
We hustled them over to Pedro at Star Office Machines, who promised to get them gussied up with new ribbons and tune-ups.
I promised Georgie that I’d be her pen-pal if she wrote back. To test that theory, I put the first letter to her in the mail today.
It would be wonderful if we’ve sparked a new typewriter-lover in the crowd. Judging by Georgie’s excitement at seeing her grandfather master the keyboard — and her enthusiasm to try — I think we may have spawned a new type-writer.
