Party organizers need love too.

My best friend Donna knocks herself out for her family and friends. When she organized a lunch for her daughter’s homecoming, she didn’t let the busy Christmas season deter her… she wanted to create a happy event — and since I’m usually the one who does the organizing in MY family, I knew what was…

Checkerboard cake and Champagne.

Ted and Merrie give an annual New Year’s party, with a hearty goal to thrust as many appetizers in our mouths while slamming empty Champagne bottles into a wooden dowel in the living room. (The fact that most of us drive home and are in a vintage car club doesn’t seem to be a problem)….

When a teacher makes a difference…

I let them know.   Rosanne is a Provost  at Rhode Island School of Design now, but her influence as a Furniture professor is indelible.  I try to buy art by RISD alum whenever I can.  When I met Tanya at an art exhibit — I fell in love with a white-on-white piece she’d made……

Ties that bind.

There are two types of people:  plane-talkers and plane-sleepers.  I assess  my seat mate before I say a word. If there’s no eye contact, I follow suit. (I’m shy so I don’t like being rejected).  I boarded a Virgin flight from Boston expecting to sleep, but the well-dressed man next to me seemed smart, and…

When a candidate calls…

I listen.  It’s unusual to pick up the phone at the busy dinner hour and have a politician introduce herself. I was so impressed when I got a personal outreach from Julia Brownley (running for Congress), I not only sent a check — but let her know as well.  The personal touch still counts! Please…

Thanking those who speak out…

As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I wonder how villagers who lived near the concentration camps could pretend they knew nothing as the trains full of prisoners emptied out and later, ashes darkened the sky. As a result, I can’t sit idly by if I see injustice.  I’m always relieved when someone else has…

Making friends with agents…

Sometimes I’ll get a “Thank you” for my “Thank you”.   I wrote a television agent who got promoted at a major talent agency (after working for a long-time friend of mine). Jad is always very professional and we had several calls about an up & coming film producer named Alec whom we want to…

An unexpected compliment…from a homeless person in Beverly Hills.

After a less-than-delightful doctor’s visit today I stood on the corner of Brighton Way in Beverly Hills, waiting for the light to turn green.  A homeless lady lurched toward me, dominating the street’s white lines as she illegally crossed. I assessed the situation.  Two other tattered citizens were opposite corners, one guy with a sign and another plundering…

Typewriter love.

My friend gave me a blank book with pictures of colorful typewriters.  When I figured out the illustrator hailed from RISD, I wrote her a note. She was happy to hear from me, and sent a couple of decals for the next time I feel like applying a non-permanent typewriter tattoo. Please Share
