Pink envelope with a bow.

Cate F., age 7, sent me a piece of paper yesterday with notes and pictures on the front AND the back.  An array of well-drawn animals — a dog, a cat, a fox, a mouse, an My penpal Cate.owl, a bunny, another mouse, and an elephant — all saying “THANK YOU”.   On the other side Cate drew flowers and asked —  “Did you give me a card? *Write back*”.

I note her new use of * asterisks* and smile.

We’re officially pen-pals —  after I started her off a year or so ago with a stack of colorful stationery and fun pens — and now Cate definitely gets the concept.  (I’m excited because when we began, her Daddy David told me Cate had never received a letter in the mail before mine.  I can see how far we’ve come.   I’ve helped turn one little author onto the “joy of correspondence” and I’m very happy.)

P.S.  Pink is Cate’s favorite color, in case you wondered.

(Check out the hand-tied bow she added to the back of the envelope.  I’d never thought of embellishing one like that.  Isn’t that cool?)

I’ll write, Cate, I promise.  I only wish I could draw as well as you!
