Typewriters in Pawtucket, courtesy of stationery from the Cerulean Tower, Tokyo Hotel.
Ceramicist/potter Adam Silverman travels the world, and he keeps an eye out for typewriter memorabilia for me where ever he goes. He also collects hotel stationery, when it’s nice, and that’s a diminishing world, believe me. (When was the last time YOU snagged a few pieces of nice paper from a hotel room to write a note? Time’s up.)
He and I do, though, and we share that bond.
When I got an envelope from The Cerulean tower Tokyo Hotel this week, I was intrigued. “Who do I know from THERE?” I wondered as I ripped into it with my silver envelope ripper. (It’s late, forgive me for blanking on what the name of the implement is… it will come to me.)
Oh, letter opener. Duh.
Anyway, I ripped into the missive and found this note from Adam — “I figured you probably don’t get R.I, Monthly. Naturally this article made me think of you. Adam”.
The story in the blue column is all about a typewriter repairman MICHAEL MARR in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He services 15 machines a week. Says younger students are finding them … “not just for nostalgia …” but “After five or six hours starting at a screen… things start to look a little uzzy, and the brain feels fuzzy.”
Thank you, Adam.
You know the next time I’m Rhode Island for a RISD meeting — where I’ll head!
