“The Whipping Man” with Charlie Robinson.
My friend Lesley Brander, who is involved with The Pasadena Playhouse — and with me at UC Santa Cruz — invited my friend Donna Brown Guillaume to Opening Night of “The Whipping Man”.
Donna and I jumped at the opportunity. When I got there, I realized, “I’ve never been here before!” It was a strange feeling, since I thought I had been — I’ve always heard about, I’ve walked past it during the day, but never set foot inside. Donna knows Charlie Robinson, who was very powerful in his role as a newly-freed Southern slave (who’s Jewish)…and we appreciated the evening from start to finish. I wrote Charlie a note afterwards to let him know we saw how hard he worked, and appreciated his commitment.
