When a Senator does a good job…
… it’s like “when you give a moose a cookie”. Everyone hears about what they did wrong but people don’t often get rewarded for just being themselves. I can’t imagine what a politician’s
“in-box” must look like. I remember when I worked as a Receptionist for CBS Nightly News, every whacko called in to harass the poor anchormen.
It’s probably not too dissimilar for a public servant. When a charming letter pops up from the sludge of haters’ mail, I hope it’s something the politician can take to heart and use to remind
themselves, “Oh yes, that’s why I’m doing this — for the people.”
I met Senator Sheldon Whitehouse at a Rhode Island School of Design Board meeting, where he shared with us about the growth and the challenges of the tiny Ocean
state. I didn’t have any axe to grind or any agenda to push. I just wanted to brighten his day and I hope I did. Since he’s a politician, and they say politicians never forget a name, maybe
he’ll recognize mine next time I run into him. And even if he doesn’t, I followed my instinct to reach out …. and that makes me feel good.
