UCSC, 50 years later & praise for a Professor.

Hopefully, we all have at least one teacher who made a difference in our lives.

For me, it was Professor Page Stegner at UC Santa Cruz.

I took an Independent Study from him about John Steinbeck — appropriate, since we

were in Steinbeck’s old neighborhood and Cannery Row was just a thumb-ride away.

I had a few other classes from Professor Stegner, too.  His father, Wallace, was

one of California’s top novelists and my parents knew him from The Committee

for Green Foothills.   I heard Page’s wife speak at a CFGF event up in Palo Alto’s

dusty hills, and got in touch with him again to tell him how important he was

to my learning.  Now that I’m working with UC Santa Cruz, I’ve been keeping

him in the loop about the school’s 50th Anniversary.  When my mother clipped

this story – quoting a few teachers I’m sure Page knew — I wanted him to see it.

And I UCSC, 50 years ago TY-UCSC-PS3 TY-UCSC-PS1told him once again how much meaning he added to my life.
